Our version of Rent envisioned a realistic production, showcasing the characters’ lived challenges. I varied between a colder, more desolate version of the East Village as documented by photos at the time, and the vibrant bohemian dreams the group had for what the community could be. I utilized numerous practicals (festoons, Christmas strand lights, street lamp, and many more) to electrify high angst moments.
